Why should I compost?

2 years ago, we started paying attention to what we put in our trash and how much.   We used to fill one full 35L plastic bag every week and put it in the general waste to be collected by the Commune.

We learned that in Switzerland we each produce 190kg of food waste every year!  Yes, 190kg!   We decided to check this ourselves!!   We started to separate our food waste which we then put in our HOTBIN.  Might as well do something with this waste, right?

Right away we noticed the number of bags going to general waste was reduced by 30% a week.   The basic math is that we were generating 10L of food waste per week.  Our 10L equals to ~5kg of food waste per week or 5kg x 38weeks = 190kg a year!!!

So, why we compost?   Well, we are contributing to the environment:  we use less plastic, we contribute to less emissions for transporting waste and we create rich compost for our garden.  Creating a cycle of life is glorious and we have learned to appreciate our garden and being outdoors.  Our food waste now creates compost that then enriches the earth to give us more food.  What can be more gratifying than that?

We are now recycling 190kg of food waste into compost every year!  It’s so easy to do, extremely rewarding and our garden loves it too.
